A cancer diagnosis is more than a medical challenge, it’s an emotional and deeply personal one. Feelings of fear, anxiety, body image concerns, and even a shift in how patients see themselves in the world are all common. But no one has to navigate this journey alone. Magnolia House at Tower Cancer Research Foundation offers a one-on-one therapy program led by Cynthia Hobbs-Hamburg, LMFT, providing emotional support and tools to help patients and survivors through every stage of their experience.
With over 30 years of experience in mental health, Cynthia has dedicated the past seven years to working directly with Magnolia House participants. Her individualized therapy program is designed to provide problem-solving support over 10 weeks, focusing on reducing anxiety, managing emotions, and helping patients regain a sense of control.
“It’s really that kind of supportive, soft place to land for an hour a week for 10 weeks,” Cynthia shares.
The brief therapy is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which means addressing deeply held beliefs and thought patterns, and working toward behavioral changes that improve emotional well-being. “It’s really kind of managing that toolkit to provide some guidance and relief and get you moving forward,” she explains.
In addition to individual therapy, Magnolia House also offers an End-of-Life Support Program, generously funded by George Radda, to provide ongoing emotional care for patients with metastatic or advanced-stage cancer.
For those who are hesitant about seeking support, Cynthia emphasizes that therapy is an opportunity. “I think it’s something to try if you feel you need additional support. Some clients are unsure at first and hesitant about the intake process, but I’m always happy to talk to them, no pressure. It’s about helping them feel heard, supported, and connected.”
If you or someone you know could benefit from emotional support, mindfulness techniques, or simply a space to process your experience, this program is for you. Therapy is not about having all the answers, it’s about finding the strength to move forward, one step at a time.
