California State University, Long Beach Research Foundation, Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute/Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Cancer Support Community Benjamin Center
With Tower’s help, the California State University, Long Beach Research Foundation and Cedars Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute will conduct a trial of a program entitled FOCUS-SCI (for Serious and Chronic Illness) program at Cedars Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute and the Cancer Support Community Benjamin Center. The FOCUS-SCI program is unique in offering a strength-based approach that is preventive in that it builds relational capacity via training in specific resilience-enhancing skills and practices. The primary service goals are to provide state-of-the art conjoint psychosocial services to a diverse group of couples and families contending with the stresses associated with cancer and to build capacity at a central medical and community service center. The evaluative goals are to determine the feasibility of offering these services within a medical and community setting and evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention with regard to reducing depression and anxiety among patients and caregivers, improving emotional and behavioral functioning among children, and improving quality of life and relationships within the family or couple.
