Camp Kesem for Kids Impacted by Cancer

Camp Kessem

Grant: $25,000

Funded by the Cancer Free Generation at Tower Cancer Research Foundation. There are more than 120,000 children impacted by a parent’s cancer in Southern California, and Kesem is the largest organization solely and comprehensively dedicated to serving these children and their families. Kesem is proud to operate 13 chapters in the Southern California region, which plan to serve over 1,000 children in 2020. Kesem’s chapter model is driven by passionate college student leaders who support these children through and beyond their parent’s cancer via their free week-long summer camps and year-round touch points. While every child experiences a parent’s cancer journey uniquely - regardless of if a parent dies, survives, or is currently undergoing treatment – their transformative Kesem experience helps address the often common and significant effects they face including; isolation from peers, negative academic performance, loss of social interest, and taking on adult responsibilities at home. For many children, Kesem is a life-changing experience, resulting in improved self-esteem, enhanced coping skills, increased self-confidence, and stronger emotional intelligence. Kesem provides a safe and welcoming environment to have fun and rediscover the childhood cancer has often taken away.
