Heart Touch Oncology Clinic at The Wellness Center
The Heart Touch Project
The Heart Touch Project has been providing massage therapy to in-need, underserved, and economically disadvantaged cancer patients in the Heart Touch Oncology Clinic at The Wellness Center (TWC), located at the Historic General Hospital (LAC + USC Medical Center) since 2018. All services are provided free-of-charge and are extremely well received by both patients and medical staff alike. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the organization was forced to temporarily suspend their services in order to educate/re-educate our workforce in COVID19 precautions and transmission. The Heart Touch Project’s mission has always been to provide healing, therapeutic touch to vulnerable populations and now our organization has pivoted to address the pressing needs of this pandemic. As of September 17, 2020, the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health has allowed physician ordered massage to be conducted indoors. This order permits The Heart Touch to reinstate their presence at the Heart Touch Oncology Clinic at TWC. With the understanding The Heart Touch Project’s future role at TWC will be different from their past work, they are taking the remainder of 2020 to train massage clinic interns in stringent COVID-19 sanitation and safety protocols to ensure a safe return for all. The Heart Touch believe that now, more than ever, supportive touch therapies are needed to reduce both the emotional and physical impact of not only a cancer diagnosis, but also the stress and psychological comorbidities that disproportionally affect lower-income populations and people of color. A grant from Tower Cancer Research Foundation will make it possible for The Heart Touch to provide massage therapy to in-need, underserved, and economically disadvantaged oncology patients.
